Embracing Impossible Goals: The Secret to Unlocking Your Potential
Have you ever felt stuck, uninspired, or like you’re just going through the motions of life?
You’re not alone.
Many of us reach a point where the routine feels mundane, and even our goals—like decluttering the house or going to the gym once a week—fail to excite us.
But what if the answer isn’t to set smaller, easier goals? What if the real magic happens when we dare to dream bigger than we ever thought possible?
Today I want to share with you my thoughts about the transformative power of Impossible Goals. These aren’t just goals—they’re invitations to think beyond the limits of what feels comfortable, to stretch your imagination, and to become the person you’ve always dreamed of being.
Why Impossible Goals Matter:
When you’re stuck in a rut, it’s often because there’s nothing truly exciting to look forward to.
Sure, you might set small goals like losing five pounds or cleaning the house, but these “to-do goals” don’t inspire or challenge you.
As I often tell my clients, “You can only grow to the edge of your imagination.” Setting an impossible goal pushes you beyond that edge, forcing you to expand what you believe is possible for your life.
Impossible Goals Give You Purpose:
Unlike small, routine tasks, impossible goals give you a reason to wake up in the morning. They inspire you to think about your life in a bigger way and ask, “What else can I achieve? What else is possible for me?”
For example, one of my clients felt stuck in her career. On paper, she was successful, but her days felt monotonous. Together, we set an impossible goal for her to start a business she was passionate about and surpass her corporate income within two years.
Was this goal scary? Yes. But it gave her something to strive for—and in the process, she discovered a new excitement for life.
How to Start Thinking Bigger:
The first thing your brain will ask when you set an impossible goal is, “How?”
But here’s the secret: the “how” is the wrong question to ask at first. If you’re overwhelmed by the thought of achieving your goal, you won’t believe it’s possible—and belief is the key to success.
Start with “What If?”
Instead of asking “how,” start by asking:
What if this is possible for me?
What if I can become the person who achieves this goal?
What if this goal changes my life in ways I can’t even imagine?
This shift in thinking creates space for belief and excitement. It moves you from fear to possibility, making the impossible feel just a little more achievable.
Focus on Who You Need to Become:
Achieving an impossible goal isn’t about checking off tasks on a to-do list. It’s about transforming your identity.
Ask yourself: Who do I need to become to make this goal a reality?
For example, if your goal is to lose 40 pounds in six months, don’t start with the logistics of how you’ll do it. Instead, ask:
What would a healthy, energetic person do?
How would they eat?
How would they move their body?
When you focus on becoming the person who achieves the goal, the actions naturally follow.
As I tell my clients, “The goal isn’t about achieving something extraordinary—it’s about becoming someone extraordinary.”
The Key to Success: Evaluation
Setting an impossible goal is just the beginning.
To stay on track, you need to regularly evaluate your progress.
Think of evaluation as your GPS. If you don’t check your direction along the way, you might find yourself working hard but heading in the wrong direction.
The Weekly Evaluation
I encourage my clients to hold a weekly evaluation meeting with themselves. During this time, ask:
What worked this week?
What didn’t work?
What do I need to adjust?
By evaluating your progress regularly, you can pivot when necessary and stay focused on what truly matters.
Stretching Your Imagination
Here’s the beautiful thing about impossible goals: they grow with you.
Once you achieve what once felt impossible, it becomes your new normal. And then you start asking, “What else can I do? What’s the next impossible goal I want to pursue?”
As I reflected on my own impossible goals, I realized that what once seemed laughably out of reach has now become my day-to-day reality. This is the magic of impossible goals—they not only transform your life but also stretch your imagination for what’s possible.
Impossible goals aren’t about perfection or even achievement. They’re about transformation.
They challenge you to think bigger, dream bolder, and become the person you were always meant to be.
So, what’s your impossible goal?
Take a moment to think about it, and remember: “You are not stuck—you’re becoming.”
Quotes to Inspire You:
“The goal isn’t about achieving something extraordinary—it’s about becoming someone extraordinary.”
“You can only grow to the edge of your imagination.”
“What if this goal is exactly what you need to move forward?”
